The writing tends to be jokey and mildly attitudinal, the better to reach the series's youngish target audience. (One wishes, though, that the writers had screwed up the courage to eschew the seemingly mandatory variations on the comment about how "it's not over until the fat lady sings" when writing about opera.) The Complete Idiot's Guide to Classical Music is intelligently laid out, starting with a brief set of basics--from the history of what we think of as classical music, to the art of listening to classical music, to how to buy a stereo system--and moving on to address a surprisingly large number of areas. There are helpful introductions to assorted instruments, composers, performers, operas, and movements, including Baroque, classical romantic, and modern. Although some of the book's emphases have a whiff of political correctness, most of the information is valuable. Authors Robert Sherman and Philip Seldon have chosen to combine both instrumental music and opera in one volume (unlike Classical Music for Dummies, which has a sister volume in Opera for Dummies). As a result, buyers who want to save money may turn to The Complete Idiot's Guide rather than to the competition. It also has a tear-out "Complete Idiot's Reference Card," with the "Top 20 Classical Works," "Top Ten Singers," "Top Ten Conductors," and so forth to take with you to the record store. Note: the categories are ranked in a highly idiosyncratic manner--based on a radio station's listeners' survey.) On the downside, unlike Classical Music for Dummies, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Classical Music doesn't have an accompanying compact disc with musical samples on it. Customer Review : Maybe I'm not the right level of idiot : The Complete Idiot's Guide to Classical Music I bought this book because I wanted to develop a better understanding of the music I was hearing at concerts. I was disappointed. The authors spent so much effort trying to make the book interesting that they didn't include the information I was seeking. I can understand the wordplay in the section headings, but I got VERY tired of the "Bet You Didn't Know" sections with tidbits like "Salmonella was reputed to be such a wonderful piano player because he had two left hands." I tried to just skip them, but the remainder of the text assumed the reader had read those sections. The music theory portion of the book - the part I wanted to understand the most - is only 13 pages and still left me lost. Some of it may be from oversimplification. One question I had - and still have - is the meaning of a piece described as being In C Major. The book states that this is "the basic tone on which the rest of music is constructed." I don't know if that means the most common note, the midpoint, or something else. Examples of specific works would go a long way to making this discussion more useful. This book might be an amusing resource if you're looking for biographical trivia about composers, singers, or performers. But I would not recommend it for someone struggling to understand the music.

An indispensable introductory guide to classical music. : The Vintage Guide to Classical Music

When I first decided to learn more about classical music, this was the first book I turned to. "The Vintage Guide to Classical Music" is an excellent reference guide for those who love this genre of music but don't know a great deal about it. Using reasonably detailed and very interesting biographical essays on the major composers, author Jan Swafford gives the reader an excellent historical overview of classical music from its beginnings until the early 1990s, when this book was published. Also included are "sidebars" which explain in clear and easy to understand prose different topics such as sonata form, melody, atonal music, etc. Swafford also includes a section which explains how to begin building a classical music library. I found this especially useful in building my own classical CD collection.

"The Vintage Guide to Classical Music" is extremely well written, and obviously well researched. It's also very entertaining! The author consistently demonstrates not only a wealth of knowledge about his subject, but his love for it as well. For me, this book remains an indispensable guide to classical music. Highly recommended!

This book is a guide to classical music. Its cover brags that it is, "The A-Z of composers, key works and top recordings." Amazon's text says this, the 4th edition of the Rough Guide to Classical Music, is completely revised. I'm not sure what they mean by that since the contents are virtually the same as the third edition. Only the "feature boxes" section -- which includes one-page features on stuff like "What is a Fugue" and "The English Reformation" that appear during a composer section -- looks to be about twice as large. The third edition (with Kissin on the cover) totaled 610 pages; this edition (with Rattle on the cover) totals 642 pages. But, when placed on its side and measured with a ruler, the third edition is 1 1/2 inches thick and the new edition is 1/3/8 inches thick with equal type size. Furthermore, there is not a single new composer represented in the new edition. I am very disappointed and disconcerted that my favorite little composer, Franz Krommer -- a 19th century composer of woodwind and harmoniemusik that was once a rival to Beethoven -- is not included. Neither is another of my recent discoveries, Richard Wetz, a late romantic that lived until 1935 whose three symphonies (reminiscent of Bruckner and Mahler), violin concerto and requiem have all been recorded in recent years. While neither is represented in the rough guide, obscure composers named Roberto Gebhard, Johnathan Harvey and Giacinto Scelsi each get a page or two. They were all included in the third edition, as well. Maybe I'm wrong, you say, and these are important composers worthy of mention? The Rough Guide says Roberto Gebhard is, "One of the most important and distinctive Spanish composers of the 20th century." They list recordings of his Symphony No. 3 and string quartets to justify his inclusion. Yet there is not a mention in this guide about the British symphonist Robert Simpson, one of England's more important postwar symphonists who wrote 11 of them. They have all been recorded and a box of the 11 was released last year to great acclaim in certain quarters. He is not important enough to be mentioned in this book. Not mentioning the low profile Simpson is one thing. The failure to include a profligate and popular crossover classic-to-romantic era composer like Krommer in a book that pretends to represent classical music is ridiculous. To ensure I wasn't being petty, I went to Arkiv Music to count recordings. There are 35 recordings by Franz Krommer listed at Arkiv Music while the trio of Gebhard, Harvey and Scelsi are represented by a big fat zero. This tells me the authors, or the corporation that publishes the rough guide series, doesn't know this industry and makes little attempt to improve its product from edition to edition. Perhaps I am just being finicky about this? Maybe this is really a good guide that can do a lot for someone new to classical music and I am needlessly being critical of its obvious shortcomings? I admit certain of its feature boxes are helpful and there are a lot more of them this time than last. Brief features on "Postmodernism and After", "The Concerto", "The Leitmotiif" and "The Rise of the Virtuoso" will help someone just getting started in classical music come to know a bit about its historic intricacies. I can't be very enthusiastic about the recordings recommended in this guide, however. There seems to be a marked step backward in the dozen or so I reviewed. Whom among you reading this review would accept a recommendation of the Harnoncourt-Berlin Philharmonic box as the best set of Brahms symphonies available? Or the same conductor and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe being the preferred set of Beethoven symphony recordings? Incredibly, these are the first sets listed under each composer. Getting this version of the Rough Guide to Classical Music was, as you can tell, more of a disappointment for me than coming to know the earlier version of the book. Now, with the 1,500-page All Music Guide available for only a couple dollars more than this one -- a book that discusses every composer and most performers in more depth than this one and makes more judicious recommendations on recordings -- there is no need for people just coming to classical muisc to settle for this. There is just about nothing here of value to experienced collectors. I'd say avoid this if you know anything about classical music and spend your money on the All Music Guide if you're just getting started.

Modest improvement for 2010 and hundreds more listings than Gramophone's book : The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music 2010: The Key Classical Recordings on CD, DVD and SACD

As other reviewers have stated, this 2010 edition is shorter and even less up-to-date than previous volumes. Penguin claim it is completely revised ! This claim can be easily disputed. Take for example the entry for Felix Weingartner. It is the same in the 2010 edition as it was in the 2009 edition, citing the first CPO release 'in this first issue of a projected Weingartner series'. In fact, volumes 2-6 were all released between 2005 and early 2009, making a complete mockery of the 'currentness' of this book.

I could list many, many more such examples, but it would be wasting both my time, and yours.

I'm going to use it as a door-stop, as it certainly is not the 'more comprehensive than ever before and now updated annually' reference book that Penguin claim. Save your money and browse through Amazon for buyer reviews. I have been buying this guide for more years than I care to think about. Unless 2011 is dramatically different, I will never buy it again.

A no-brainer recommendation for classical music newbies. : The Vintage Guide to Classical Music

Looking for an introduction to the world of classical music, I came across this gem in the local library (um ... can we mention the library on Amazon.com?). The book was just what I was looking for, brief biographical sketches of major composers arranged in chronological order with accompanying notes on their place in the development of classical music.

The book is divided into classical music periods (Baroque, Romantic, etc.) in chronological order, with brief notes at the beginning of each period describing the times. The author then gives a brief biography for each major composer in that period, and afterward spends a few pages introducing the major works by that composer and suggesting which ones would be good to start with. At the end of the book, the author also has a good list of suggested works for building your own classical music library.

The author is very easy to read, and makes learning about classical composers and music interesting. He obviously has some opinions about composers music, but you can tell they are learned opinions, and they make the reading all the more fun.

This book is not just biographies, and not just a history of music, it is the history of classical music through the people who made that music. It is the ideal introduction to classical music, and a good book to have in your own library.
